Search Engine Optimization – The introduction
SEO is not rocket science. It does require experience with search engines and is refined by trial and error.
There is no such thing, understand that. Why you might ask? I think a short history will explain this well.
A little more than a decade ago when Google did not exist yet and yahoo was the main player in search engines, when you entered a search query into yahoo, you got some seriously bad results. Maybe you where around on the net back then and can remember those days.
Searching was a real pain. It did not matter what your search query was, the returning results was always porn. So if you were searching for bible stories, the first batch of results were porn.
Then Google came to be and that changed. They decided amongst other things, that it would be a good idea to actually look at the contents of a web page and then decide if the keywords where indeed correct. Not a bad idea at the time, and that already made things much better.
That was just the beginning. As Google got better, the guys whom always had their search results at the top at yahoo got really upset that the returning results on those bible queries where not porn anymore. They wanted to have the porn everywhere, at all times. Today they are known as spammers.
Google rightly thought this was a bad idea, and that it would be good to give the searcher what he is looking for. So Google got more sophisticated. In turn the spammer got more sophisticated going again for that top 1 spot he just lost. Then Google retaliated and the war for the top 1 spot is on.
Maybe now you will have an idea why the exact way Google functions is a real multibillion dollar trade secret. You will also understand that if it was real easy to get to the top of the search results, everyone – especially the spammers would do it and it would also become obsolete very quickly!
To get back to the seo quick fix question, no there is no such thing anymore and even if there was, it would be obsolete in ten minutes after it was implemented by its founder.
A word of advice.
Real good search engine optimization takes time and real research. It is a field in which persistence pays.
Doing your own website’s seo could be problematic in the sense that you do not have the benefit of the experience of more than one website. Optimizing several websites gives you the understanding of how the search engines treated different industries. You will learn how long it takes to get listed, what worked, what did not work and how the search engine listings vary from industry to industry.
It still does not make it impossible to do your website's seo yourself. On this site you will find loads of information that will assist you in developing an understanding of search engine optimization and internet marketing. So you will be able to do it yourself. Given patience and time spent on research, anyone can do it.
Remember: if after some time has elapsed, you did not manage to obtain the desired results or if you require results in a shorter time frame and do not have time to “play” with, then my advice is to get someone to do it for you.
Important: Anyone can get to the top 1 spot on Google for almost any key-phrase. It is attainable – given the time to research and given the resources to build the site up to reach that point. Keep in mind that this differs from industry to industry. The quantity, size and quality of your competition will determine how long it will take to reach that ever illusive top 1 slot.
And yes, it is a lot of work. You get to the top 1 spot because Google believes you deserve to be there.
